Efficient EC Motors
Savvy building operators are busy examining retrofit technologies that will reduce maintenance and save energy thru increased performance. The new Electronically Commutated “EC” motors will be a welcome addition to the list of popular conservation solutions. This motor design delivers more power at lower input watts as compared to a standard shaded pole motor. Shaded pole motors are prevalent in refrigeration and air handlers, it is less expensive and therefore the manufactured standard. A typical supermarket has over 400 traditional shaded pole motors to maintain their food stock. The efficiency rate on a standard shaded pole motor is below 20%, the lost 80% escapes as heat effecting and transferring into the refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. This additional heat causes longer compressor run times, and additional wasted energy. Todays EC motors reach efficiency levels of 70%, they run cooler, quieter and longer than standard fan motors.
Electronically Commutated motors are perfectly suited for walk in refrigeration, Light commercial ventilation units, bottle coolers, refrigerated display cases, ice machines and vending machines. These motors utilize a low friction bearing system that assures long life, consistent speed and high running smoothness. Many of these motors offer 3 pre-determined speed settings and uses a soft start feature for quiet ramp up to desired speed. Others have the ability to be fully variable speed from 300 to 2500 RPM. The added benefit to any piece of equipment that ramps up slowly, runs cooler and runs less is longer lifespan and reduced maintenance. The product will qualify for certain regional incentives will often pay back well within 12 months.
