Facility Audits and Assessments

Many clients on the quest for efficiency will ask me if they should begin with a full energy audit or an energy assessment, and what is the difference. An energy audit is generally a thorough facility and billing statement investigation preformed by a professional certified auditor or engineer. The process can take over a month, is quite comprehensive, and often costs several thousand dollars. An audit will yield an extensive report that will detail current building equipment and offer recommendations to improve efficiencies in the envelope and systems.

A specific conservation assessment on the other hand, will yield actual savings data or recommended technologies along with the ROI examples. An experienced consultant who specializes in efficiency technologies will target projects that will maximize benefit. An assessment will generally cost less and will include  ROI statements and actual cost quotes for available retrofit technologies. At National Energy Technologies we offer so many possible efficiency technologies that likely several projects along with the corresponding ROI's can be compared, and choices can be made about starting points and worth while projects. Ask your NET consultant about our "Road map to Utility Reduction" that will outline a strategy to utilize savings from the first conservation install to help finance the next one or two and so on. This approach will result in considerable savings and a healthy reduction of a businesses carbon footprint.. This technique utilizes a holistic approach and has produced energy saving results from 30 to 50% without renewable energy. Our services can continue to include discussions with all departments as well as feedback from employees. These practices can lead to employee cooperation, waste reduction, a more comfortable and motivated workforce, as well conservation certification opportunities and media sources find it newsworthy.

We approach this process systematically, allowing our customer to set the pace. We can assist in financing these projects or install first the "low hanging fruit" or the fastest ROI retrofits, and then use the savings to help fund other energy saving systems.

Advanced Air Purification

Spring allergies can be unbearable without adequate protection from the billions of pollen spores that will enter your building. Fortunately air purity specialists have produced a whole house air sanitizer that combines four advanced technologies for maximum allergen eradication. National Energy Technologies is proud to be a factory distributer for the GT3000 and Duct Pure systems, possibly the most advanced air purification systems on the market. Incorporating photo catalytic oxidation technology, high level negative ionization, safe levels of ozone, and electrostatic filtration, the GT3000 reduces particles and inactivates microbes thus providing a cleaner, healthier environment for you and your building occupants. The Duct Pure creates Photo Catalytic Oxidation which will destroy VOC's, odor, bacteria, viruses and mold spores.

Using four advanced technologies, the GT3000 helps to eliminate odors, smoke, pollen, dust, bacteria, mold, pet dander, viruses, and much more. Pollution is eliminated in as little as 15 minutes, and the most difficult pollution in as few as 24 hours. Unlike other air purifiers that have only one or two ways of eliminating pollution, the GT3000 has four advanced technologies to destroy pollution from the air, embedded in walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, furniture, clothing, on counter tops and other surfaces. These technologies help to sanitize everything in the area and can reduce or eliminate all odors, including cigarette smoke, mildew, cooking odors, and more.

The Advanced Photo Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) Cell in the Duct Pure and GT3000 not only destroys biological contaminants traveling through the cell, but it produces purifying plasma which breaks down odors, mold, bacteria and viruses. Photo Catalytic Oxidation reactors have been proven to reduce dangerous pathogens by over 99% in 24 hours or less. This process is molecular disassociation, which doesn’t just cover up the source, it actually breaks the molecule down. The result at the end of the breakdown process is Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor.

The GT3000 also generates Needlepoint Ionization, a continuous stream of millions of negative ions that circulate throughout the building. These ions charge particles of dust, smoke, dander, bacteria and viruses; causing them to attract other particles and clump together. As more and more particles come together, they become heavier, making them easier to pull into the building filter or just fall to the floor to be vacuumed up. Unlike HEPA filters that can only filter out particles of .5 microns or larger, the ionizer in the GT3000 can reduce ultra-fine particles, even nano-particles, that are much more dangerous than the larger particles you can see. This means your employees and customers breathe easier with fewer particles in the breathing space, less exposure to bacteria, mold and virus particles as well.

In the sanitization Mode the purification plate is activated to generate activated oxygen to assist in breaking down mold, bacteria, smoke and other biological contaminants which cause odors. By setting the purifier based upon the area to be treated, just the right amount of purification is produced to keep the space fresh and clean. For faster cleanup an “Away Mode” feature which has an auto-shutoff programmable timer allows for maximum output to be used when the room unoccupied. An advanced electrostatic filter is included with the GT3000 to help keep the purifier clean while at the same time filter out particles which clump together thanks to the needlepoint ionization. Unlike expensive HEPA filters, the electrostatic filter is washable and can be used over and over again.

Utility Analysis and Audit

The most effective way to determine the accuracy of your utility billing and negotiate your maximum advantage is to analyze or audit a facility's electricity billing, and advise on important adjustments. Knowing what the components of utility bills mean and how they affect overall usage cost is important for building owners and their facility engineers and energy managers to understand. Analyzing the individual cost components of a monthly electricity billing may seem daunting to the casual observer especially when some of the terms seem like they were derived from a foreign language, but with help from a utility representative.it can be done.

Auditing utility bills and contracts can mean many things to many people. Perhaps the most commonly held view relates to finding mistakes that the utility company has made that cause the customer excess costs. There are many utility-bill auditing consultants in the field that do just that: Audit utility bills to find mistakes and in turn base their fees on a percentage of the customer's utility refunds that might be due to them as a result of utility-caused errors. Utilities do make errors, but not many; if they do make mistakes, they are a result of misinformation or honest miscalculations. Rarely do we find that mistakes are the result of a conscious effort on the utility's part to be dishonest.

What is more important in analyzing billing data is being able to understand the information buried deep within the monthly billing. The utility has the responsibility to place a customer on an applicable tariff rate classification; in turn, the customer is responsible for determining whether they are being served on the least expensive rate classification the utility has available. Surprisingly, the serving utility does not have the burden of putting the customer on the least costly rate. Since cost is heavily dependent upon the usage characteristics of each customer, there are opportunities for savings from changing to a different rate classification, or aggregating usage. The first area to investigate, therefore, is the one relating to alternate tariff rate schedules that may be available to a customer upon their request.

National Energy Technologies has expert field auditors familiar with the utility policies in that region to perform the audit or utility. Armed with the knowledge of what alternate tariff rates may be available from the utility and what the components of electric bill costs are, the analyst can begin the investigation.

Demand Charges, as it applies to the monthly electricity billing, is defined as "the reservation of the capacity the utility has to maintain for the customer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, expressed in kilowatts (kW) or kilovolt-amperes (kVA)." There is no usage of electricity purchased in this portion of the billing, only the reservation of electricity capacity. Peak or maximum demand charges are applied to the maximum demand for energy required by a system in a given period of time. Utilities charge a monthly fee based upon the maximum power (expressed as kilowatts, or kW) required in a given period of time, usually either a 15- or 30-minute interval. The peak or maximum demand charge can vary from less than $2 to over $18 per kW per month. A control strategy to reduce these peaks can result in sizable savings. Many times a revision in how and when equipment is turned on or off can be all that is needed to reduce the monthly demand charges. In other cases, a computer-controlled energy-management system can be used to sense impending peak demands and adjust energy requirements to reduce peak demands.

Phone bills in some organizations are so large that often large over billing errors are able to be claimed and retrieved. This errors can be permanently corrected to continue to save resources into the future.

These strategies can save a corporation hundreds of thousands of dollars in utility costs over time. Audits are often performed at no cost. the auditor will ask to share the savings with the client.

Green Speaking

Resource conservation is a subject on the minds of many corporate planners for all of the right reasons. Public appreciation, pollution reduction, best practice and expense reduction are all powerful reasons. Sound conservation investments however, have not impressed many large facility owners as they wade through tired options with poor payback. Replacing operational equipment with more efficient models does not seem to make great sense or pay back. National Energy Technologies; a company that specializes in advanced conservation retrofit technologies desires to change that opinion. They research, test, validate and educate building owners on little known, rapid payback strategies that also protects equipment and health. They also have created a series of outstanding training sessions presented by skilled educators motivated to help an organization accomplish their environmentally friendy and sustainable goals.

Demand Response

National Energy Technology Announces a partnership approval as Direct National Affiliate provider for Energy Curtailment Specialists (ECS).  ECS is the Nation’s premier Demand Response (DR) specialist. Energy Curtailment, called Demand response will compensate a large energy user to stand ready to reduce a pre-determined amount of electricity on high demand days as a last line of grid shortage defense.

Demand Response programs have become an important part of energy planning.  Rather than build additional power plants or impose rolling blackouts just to satisfy peak times of extreme grid shortages, power companies are adopting Demand Response programs. DR allows electric grid operators to reduce system stress during rare emergency peak events. The large user gets rewarded significantly to stand ready to reduce a pre-determined amount of electricity as a last line of system defense. The events are rare, fully predictable and typically only last for two hours.

National Energy Technology has partnered with ECS because of their grid stress prediction ability, their unique shadow meter and their curtailment call center strategists. We are so immersed on grid supply and weather patterns that our curtailment team is able to provide up to two days’ notice before an event.
They have been in the business for over ten years and have over 1200 satisfied clients enrolled. ECS has been in the industry for over ten years, and has paid out over $150 million to program participants. Demand Response reduces pollution, benefits the power company, and produces a new large income stream to a business. A real Win, Win, Win.  At our expense a trace meter will be installed to allow you and our curtailment management team to accurately monitor events in real time. Along with our shadow meter will come our patented cutting edge Demand Track software.   Demand Track is a powerful cloud based platform that allows users to view data, charts and reports that make program administration easy. A demand response consultant will carefully analyze your business practices and will assist in determining the proper curtailment procedures and amounts. Participating in the event is not mandatory and does not need to fully meet the pre-determined goal. Participation in the program is completely free and reward will be determined by amount curtailment ability, and the ability to meet those commitments. This program is ideal for large businesses with powerful back-up generation or co-generation systems. Utilizing these systems during an DR event can allow for additional curtailment without effecting operation.

Utility Procurement

National Energy Technologies is also able to assist its clients by securing the best possible utility rates available. Our allies have been in negotiating consumer utility rates for a combined 25 years. We have also securing rebate refunds for thousands of clients on their utility bills by correcting billing errors. We have positioned ourselves in the deregulated market place to be able to offer our clients an array of different options. Because of the relationships that we hold with our long history in this business, we have had the ability to hand select the Electric and Gas Suppliers with whom we partner. All the suppliers in our channel have a strong financial backing. When suppliers compete for your business, you win!  We ask that you sign a letter of authorization that allows NET or our ally in you region to contact the Local Distribution Company (LDC) directly to request historical billing information on each of your utility accounts.

Once we obtain the data from the LDC, we create a summary data spread sheet for each account. This eliminates the time/resources that suppliers would otherwise spend which in turn helps them reduce their margin when pricing your account(s).  After reviewing the data and discussing with you, we will write a customized RFP for your company.

There are various options when requesting pricing from Suppliers. We may recommend a customized block/index price based on your interval data or a fixed price for 12, 24, or 36 months. There are many other customized scenarios that will be determined once the data is reviewed.    After the RFP is completed, we will send it to our network of highly competitive EGSs to bid on your specific usage using a proprietary auction platform. All Suppliers know that they are bidding on the same account. This type of auction platform makes the bidding very competitive. Suppliers know that they must sharpen their pencils and price aggressively if they want to win the business. This is the first round of indicative pricing.

When the Suppliers submit their indicative pricing, your assigned Account Executive will gather the prices and can create a Supplier Quote Comparison. All Suppliers quote differently. Charges such as Gross Receipt Tax, Line Losses, and other Ancillary charges may be added to the price quoted by a Supplier. When you are presented the Supplier Quote Comparison you will see all inclusive quotes that are apples to apples. The prices listed are the prices that you would be billed. NO HIDDEN CHARGES! The Supplier Quote Comparison will show not only the Supplier prices but also how they compare to the LDCs default price and what your projected savings will be based on your annual KWH usage. This will all be thourougly explained by your NET account representative and account negotiator.

After we review the Supplier Quote Comparison with you, we will begin our next auction process. This process consists of narrowing down to the top three suppliers. We will send you blank contracts for your review during this time. We will also agree on a date to run our final executable auction. During this time, the top suppliers will submit their final price. The timing in this process is very important. Most Supplier prices are only good until 5pm. We will work with you on scheduling the results so that when the bidding is complete you will be ready to contract with the winning supplier.

Once the winning Supplier price is selected, we will use our proprietary software and input the Supplier price into a Budget Projection for the following calendar year. We will base the projection on your last 12 months of usage and compare it to what you paid for that period the previous year.
We will then continue to monitor the deregulated energy marketplace and inform you of any additional opportunities that may present themselves.

National Energy Tech is also pleased to provide you with a “deregulation primer” to assist you in understanding electric customer choice and how it will affect utility costs for your facilities.

DEFINITIONS

Generation Company:  They are responsible for basic delivery of electric power to your facility, plus line maintenance, service restoration, meter reading, service upgrades, connection/disconnection etc. Changing power suppilers cannot effect your service.

One-bill Option:   The EDC will include EGS charges on their bill if the customer wishes and the EGS provides for this capability. With the one-bill option, EGS charges will appear in a separate section on the EDC bill and in most cases the name of the alternate supplier will be referenced.

Electric Generation Supplier (EGS);   Also referred to as the alternate supplier, the EGS provides generation (capacity and energy) and (in most cases) transmission service to the EDC’s system for delivery to your facility. An EGS can be a broker, marketer, aggregator or generator. EGS customer charges are not regulated, as they would be if the service was provided by the EDC. Many EGS companies are unregulated subsidiaries of utility holding companies that also have EDC subsidiaries. The EGS must be licensed by the PA Public Utility Commission (PUC) to do business in the State of Pennsylvania; however, the EGS prices and individual contracts with customers are not subject to regulatory approval as they would be with an EDC.

Unbundling of Electric Services:   The PA deregulation legislation required electric utilities to “unbundle” their charges into four component charges – distribution, transition, generation and transmission. A full service (PLR) customer of an EDC receives all four charges on their EDC bill

Billing Cycle:   This refers to the period extending from one meter reading to the next. Typically one month in length, most utilities consider a standard billing cycle to be a range of days, such as 26-35 days

Tariff Rates:   These are the electric rates charged by the EDC that are regulated by the PA Public Utility Commission.

Two-bill Option:   For each utility service, if an alternate generation supplier is selected, two bills will be rendered. One bill will be from the EDC for distribution and transition charges; another bill will be rendered by the EGS for generation and transmission charges.

Date of Supply:    This refers to the meter reading date when the EGS begins supply of their service. Due to startup problems associated with data transfer between EGS and EDC companies, many delays in service have been experienced, and the expected date of supply may not have been met.

Electric Commodity Price:   Electricity is now considered a commodity similar to natural gas, and as such is subject to market forces at the retail level. Alternate suppliers keep a keen eye on the commodity price of electricity since weather and power plant availability may have a significant effect on market prices. Price quotes for generation service in an unregulated market will change routinely. There are many factors that need to be considered when choosing a supplier for electricity. We welcome the opportunity to assist you with this effort.

Effects of Skin Contact with Chemicals
Chemical exposure in the workplace is a significant problem throughout the world. More than 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals via the skin each year. Skin disorders are among the most frequently reported occupational illnesses, resulting in an estimated annual cost in the United States of over $1 billion. Chemical exposures to the skin are an everyday occurrence for many workers in a wide variety of occupations, including: Agriculture, Manufacturing, Services, Transportation/Utilities, Construction and Sales. Efforts to reduce or prevent skin problems too frequently are lacking, as both workers and employers accept skin problems due to chemical exposure as part of the job. To safeguard personal health it is important to identify and manage the risk of chemical exposures to the skin and prevent injury and illness associated with dermal exposure risks.

Occupational health and safety can be improved with:
·    Knowledge of the major adverse health effects resulting from chemical exposures to the skin,
·    Information on recognizing chemical hazards.
·    Knowledge of intervention/prevention strategies.

Question ? What is the single largest organ in the Human Body?
The largest organ in the human body is the skin. The skin of an average adult has a surface area of over 21 square feet and accounts for 6% to 10% of your body weight. (2)
Skin is the body’s protective cover and the principle site of interaction with the world around it. The skin limits the loss of water and other requisite compounds from the body. At the same time, the skin also limits unwanted substances, including chemicals from entering the body. Damage to the skin reduces its ability to protect the body. Chemical exposures to the skin can result in either Temporary or Permanent adverse health impacts. These health impacts may occur at the point of contact with the chemical, or the chemical may enter the body through compromised skin (such as a wound) or by permeating the skin. Then the chemical can be distributed by the bloodstream, causing or contributing to a health problem somewhere else in the body. Temporary adverse health impacts may occur from exposure to chemicals. For example, it is not uncommon to experience dry, red, cracked skin from contact with water, soaps, gasoline, and certain types of solvents. These disorders usually heal quickly when the skin is no longer in contact with the chemical, but they can increase the chance of infection when breaks in the skin are present.

Major Types of Adverse Effects:

Direct —Exposure to chemicals can cause effects at the point of contact. These are called direct effects and include defatting/drying, irritation, corrosion, changes in pigmentation, chloracne, and skin cancer.
Examples of Direct Effects Defatting or drying results when a chemical removes the natural oils from the skin. The most frequent causes of defatted or dry skin are exposures to soaps, solvents, and moisture. This effect is temporary if the exposure ceases.

Irritation - Chemical substances that cause reddening, dryness, and cracking of the skin on contact are known as irritants. Irritation is most frequently caused by fiberglass, food products, oils and lubricants, and solvents. If caught in time, no permanent effects occur.

Corrosive - substances result in more severe or serious damage to the skin. A chemical burn can result from a brief exposure to a corrosive substance. Corrosive substances include strong alkali (basic) materials and acids. Scarring is a common outcome. Effects resulting from exposure to corrosives are permanent.

Changes in Pigmentation - A permanent change in skin color may result from exposure to certain chemicals, such as tar and asphalt products and some disinfectants.

Chloracne - is a type of acne caused by certain halogenated aromatic chemicals. It can occur after exposure to polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCBs) and certain pesticides.

Skin Cancer -Malignant skin tumors may occur after exposure to an occupational carcinogen. Some chemicals found in the workplace contain cancer-producing substances (carcinogens). When these come in contact with the skin, malignant tumor may form at the site of contact.

Systemic — Chemicals can enter the body and cause or contribute to health problems somewhere else in the body. These are called systemic effects and may affect a specific organ or an entire body system.

Specific Organs - Chemicals absorbed into the body through the skin can cause damage to a specific organ, such as the liver, kidney, or bladder. Liver and kidney damage may occur from exposure to solvents such as toluene and xylene.

Human Body Systems - Chemicals absorbed through the skin can damage an entire body system, including the immune system, nervous system, or respiratory system. Pesticides and herbicides are chemicals that may impact body systems.

Sensitization Effects - Allergic contact dermatitis is an allergic response (immunological response) of the skin as a result of exposure to a chemical. Chemical exposures that may result in allergic contact dermatitis include epoxy resins, chromates, rubber chemicals, amine hardeners, and phenol-formaldehyde resins.

Sensitization—Chemicals may cause a sensitization effect, in which an individual becomes unusually susceptible to a chemical or group of chemicals. From then on, exposure to even very small amounts of the substance can cause an allergic reaction. The only way to deal with sensitization is to prevent any further exposure or contact with the chemical. Sensitization effects include allergic contact dermatitis and airway sensitization.

Prevention- Following good housekeeping practices are the first steps in preventing chemical exposure. A clean work area helps prevent skin contact with chemicals from work surfaces. Use personal protective equipment when exposure to chemicals is unavoidable. This may include

Elimination - Eliminate unnecessary chemicals from a work process. For example, use disposable brushes rather than cleaning them with a solvent.

Substitute - Replace a harmful chemical or product with one that is less harmful. For example, substitute a solvent-based product with a water-based one.

Control - Chemical exposure to the skin can be controlled or reduced by these actions.

Modify the process - Modify a process to eliminate chemical exposure. For example, rather than hand-cleaning metal parts during repair operations, use a mechanical cleaner.

Add ventilation - Reduce airborne exposures by adding local or general ventilation. For example, use ventilation during spray-painting operations to reduce airborne levels of isocyanates.

Maintain healthy skin - Clean skin with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and use moisturizer. Dry skin is damaged and more affected by chemicals.

Modify work practices - Modify work practices to reduce or eliminate skin contact with chemicals. For example, rather than applying a solvent with a rag, use a brush.

Slip and Fall Reduction

For ages society has accepted the fact that ceramic tile and bare feet or even rubber souled shoes just don’t mix. It is a general assumption that if there is wet tile you had better be careful, but if you are in bare feet and dripping water be ready to recover.  According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC),
unintentional falls account for 19,565 deaths annually in the U.S.  The Center estimates that 20% to 30% of people who experience a slip and fall will suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bone bruises, broken wrists and even hip fractures, or head injuries. These injuries can inhibit mobility and hamper independent living. Slip and fall accidents are the common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and these account for 46% of fatal falls among older Americans. These injuries often result in a reduction in productivity or even litigation.

Tile of all types is a popular floor covering choice worldwide especially in the high end Resort / Hotel industry. The problem is exaggerated in the warmer climates because of the amount of tile flooring that is set for exterior areas and exposed to wetness from rain. It is no surprise that over a million of us will fall from our feet because of wet tile each year. Tile suppliers have attempted to improve the problem with textured surfaces and creative manufacturing but danger remains when wet bare feet are present.

Fortunately advanced science and modern alchemy have provided a solution that will correct slippery tile in a surprising way. Our chemical formula is a two part process that will increase traction by forever changing the tile surface. It is formulated as a mild acid that is able to etch the surface on a cellular level, adding microscopic hills and valleys that will increase traction up to 300%. It is not possible to notice a difference in the appearance or feel of the tile if the process is properly applied. This is not a coating as there will be nothing left on the surface to chip wear or change in appearance with age or UV light.

The application of this process can be tricky and must be completed by a certified applicator for proper analysis and result. Determining the proper time to allow the acid to work must be carefully determined to allow for maximum traction improvement without modifying the appearance. The 2nd part of this process is designed to stop the acid reaction leaving the proper amount of time for the treatment.

This product is perfect for tile bathrooms, spa’s, exterior tile, kitchen floors, tile pool surrounds, retirement communities and grocery stores. The treatment can last for years dependent on traffic, cleaning techniques, and grease from cooking.
